Summary
This is a compilation of ground motion intensity metrics and associated metadata for earthquakes from 2010 to 2020 in the central and eastern U.S. The dataset includes 38,400 records from 269 events with magnitudes ranging from M3.0 to M5.8. The ground motion metrics include peak ground acceleration, peak ground velocity, and 5% damped spectral acceleration at 21 periods from 0.01 sec to 10 sec. The data are given in a comma-separated value (CSV) file named “ceus_metrics_flag_rotd50.0_v230315_suppl.csv”, in which each row corresponds to a ground motion record. The definitions of the columns are given in the “ceus_metrics_README.csv” file. These metrics are all for the rotation independent method of combining horizontal components called “RotD50” (Boore, 2010).
Note that earthquake information (magnitude, latitude, longitude, and depth) is given for the authoritative event in the Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS) Comprehensive Earthquake Catalog (ComCat; U.S. Geological Survey, 2017) and also for our “preferred” magnitude. The preferred magnitude is selected from a search of all magnitudes available in ComCat, and the selected magnitude type is given in the “PreferredMagnitudeMethod” column. This column also indicates if a magnitude type conversion was applied. The magnitude conversion method is described by Mueller (2019).
The data file contains a column named “CoastalPlainsSedThick”, which gives the estimated sediment thickness as given by Boyd (2023). The column named “Vs30” gives the estimate of the time-averaged shear-wave velocity in the upper 30 m from Heath et al. (2020).
The events in this dataset did not include any finite fault models. Thus, the finite fault distances were estimated using the Thompson and Worden (2018) method.
